Vision 2023…
Millions of Americans will make New Year’s resolutions this year. By the time summer rolls around, only 4% of them will be keeping up with them. We are now midway through January. Time to separate the pretenders from the contenders. The idea of making a resolution at the beginning of the year is not a bad one. It is a practice that dates back to ancient Rome when people made promises to the god of beginnings, Janus. That’s how January got its name. I wonder if the Romans were any better at following through on their resolutions than Americans are today. If you are serious about wanting to make change in 2023, you need put more teeth into those promises you make to yourself, your loved ones, or even Janus. Here are three steps to help you achieve your Vision 2023:Generate a gratitude list of your wins in 2022Consider your progress in all areas of life – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, relational.
Create vision statements for 2023Dream into your ideal vision for 2023. Create a list of statements that express this vision. Keep them positive and in the present tense – your brain needs it. For example, “I maintain a healthy lifestyle” or “I develop and enrich my spiritual life.”Identify SMART behaviors for each vision statementThis is where the rubber hits the road. SMART behaviors are specific, measurable, attainable behavior towards your vision that you commit to do for a specific period of time. Consider making at least 3 for every vision statement. With the vision statement, “I maintain a healthy lifestyle,” the following are examples of SMART behaviors that you could commit to for the next 90 days: “I exercise 5x per week.” “I maintain a plant-based diet,” or “I meditate for 15 minutes each morning.”If your serious about this, you must write them down. And better yet, share them with someone for support and accountability.
